What is the FIRE Movement?

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. It is a lifestyle movement with the goal of gaining financial freedom decades before the standard retirement age of 65.

The 25x Rule (The Math Behind Freedom)

This calculator uses the "25x Rule" to determine your Freedom Number. Based on the Trinity Study, you need to save 25 times your annual expenses to safely withdraw 4% of your portfolio every year forever. Once you hit this number, work becomes optional.

Why Savings Rate Matters

Your time to retirement is primarily driven by one factor: your savings rate. If you save 50% of your income, you can retire in roughly 17 years, regardless of how much you earn. The more you save, the faster you get there.

Common Questions

What is LeanFIRE vs. FatFIRE?

LeanFIRE is retiring on a minimalist budget (e.g., $40k/year expenses = $1M portfolio). FatFIRE is retiring with a luxurious budget (e.g., $100k+/year expenses = $2.5M+ portfolio). This calculator works for both—just adjust your "Annual Spending" input.

Is the 4% rule safe?

It is generally considered safe for 30-year periods. However, for early retirees (planning for 50+ years), many experts suggest a more conservative 3.5% or 3.25% withdrawal rate to account for market volatility.

Does this include Social Security?

No. This calculator focuses purely on your personal investment portfolio. Social Security will likely be an extra "bonus" on top of your FIRE income later in life.
